Coração e cinzas — Arlindo
Silva
Guimarães: Centro Cultural Vila Flor,
2014
Pois é, Arlindo. Começo contigo a olhar para
mim. Nesse auto-retrato de 2000. Que te devolvo nesse olhar? Pouco, comparado
condensa a pluralidade unificada numa imagem única.
meticulosas, laboriosas, sofridas, rememoradas. Camada após camada, erro após
erro, acerto esperado. Acerto realizado.
Circa 2000. Espaços fechados, distâncias
curtas. Sentes, por vezes, a respiração do retratado. Ouves o seu riso,
espantas-te com as expressões faciais. A intimidade auto-revelada. A intimidade
Daí a possibilidade do silêncio. Daí a
nossa transitoriedade, claro.
O olhar do espectador.
Flores, ramos,
relva, árvores, folhas. Pele, cabelos, carne, pelos. Sentimos a sua volatilidade
ou o seu peso. E a água…
Estado líquido. Claro que a metáfora da água
aponta para a transitoriedade da vida. Outra vez. Na tua pintura condensa uma
ambiguidade vital. Recreio, claro. Brincadeiras juvenis de adultos recuperando
tempo perdido.
acarinham numa dimensão pública do privado.
E significante. Irritam-me
Necessidade. Sim. Creio que também
pintas por necessidade. E não necessidade material. Honrada, seria justificação
mais do que suficiente. Mas o posicionamento particular no contexto destas
artes nacionais, a lentidão (auto-imposta?) com a qual vais aqui e ali
aparecendo no mercado, vem confirmar isso mesmo. E, sobretudo, a maneira como
te expões. Necessidade. Catarse. Significado. Comunhão. Factos e ficção.
Factualidade ficcionada.
intensidade emocional da perda. A intensidade emocional da vivência. Pai, mãe,
mulher, filha.
atrevo-me a dizer. Tal como O profeta
o é no caso da paternidade.
No primeiro, a nudez presencial denuncia uma
proximidade visceral.
Lembro-me,
aqui, de um outro auto-retrato teu: O
homem invisível. Absorto numa tentativa de evasão, denuncias a gravidade de
um presente que contém todos os possíveis. Morte é um desses possíveis. Recordemos
A etiqueta
vivos.
Olhos fechados.
Olhos abertos a um fim sempre esperado. Por isso consegue-se sempre, e apesar
de tudo, limpar os pincéis. Para um retorno.
Retorno à pintura, diz o cliché. Não. A vida
escondido a três.
É a possibilidade do amor.
É a mesma coisa.
Daí a urgência do quotidiano.
sentimos a passagem do tempo.
sobreponha a primeiras impressões.
desenhos e sintam que algo lhes toca as entranhas. As entranhas de uma vida
vivida. As entranhas do mundo interior
de um homem invisível, que fecha os
olhos momentaneamente para melhor ver e dar a ver.
Open letter to
an artist
That’s right,
Arlindo. I start with your gaze.
In this self-portrait, taken in 2000. What can I give back, in response to your
gaze? Very little, compared with that which defines the solidity of an
unequivocal friendship.
Words as a form
of mediation with others: there’s nothing duller or more fallacious than this.
Affiliations are sketched, receptive contexts are created, a discursive
authority superimposes itself over the ultimate raison d’être of art: the
radical individual aesthetic experience. So we thus break down conventions,
just as you deconstruct the image, in its photographic and pictorial ubiquity.
Starting from the photo, paintings are moments that are constructed like shots
in a montage, for the purposes of cinematography. Condensation of stills into a
single shot. Your studio work condenses plurality, unified into a single image.
The indecisive moment that characterizes so much of contemporary photography,
in this case corresponds to a sum of meticulous, laborious, suffered,
recollected decisions. Layer after layer, error after error, an adjustment is
expected. An adjustment is achieved.
It’s the
density of this reality, subtracted in the peculiar addition of sediments of
time over the evoked instant, that determines a unique creative idiosyncrasy.
Circa 2000.
Enclosed spaces, short distances. You can sometimes sense the breathing of the
person in the portrait. You can hear his laughter, you’re amazed by his facial
expressions. Self-revealed intimacy. The celebratory intimacy of their personal
intimacy: hour after hour, day after day, gestures, words, expressions and
gazes are repeated. Hence the possibility of silence. Hence the possibility of
painting.
A territory
that will be a recurrent feature, is thereby demarcated. Your closeness is our
possibility of sharing.
The image as a
mockery of hermeneutic rationality. A shared escape route. Moments of shared
happiness (here perhaps the words “joy” and “enjoyment” would be more precise).
Moments that cannot be ranked by order, but which end up becoming the most
recurrent features of your work. An editorial decision. We’re all publishers.
We edit the manner in which we position ourselves. In the centre, at the edge.
We edit how we want people to observe us. We edit the feelings that we repress or
share. And, when we’re active in the cultural sphere, this editing process
becomes intensely violent. We all ask ourselves: Why another object? Why
another image? Why another text. What machine are we fuelling, what precise
need are we satisfying? Our fleeting existence, of course. We’ll go back there.
Now I can talk about the fleeting existence of a critical positioning when
faced by an overwhelming past (commonly known as “the history of art”), which
is expected to be developed in a differentiated and constructive manner.
This is not the
portrait of a generation. It’s the crystallized portrait of a moment in your
life, of your moments, which are rendered universal via the particularity of
the individual life experiences of others. The eye of the beholder. Masks. Painting as a mask, that pushes
us away from individualised identification, in order to draw closer to
abstract, yet individualisable, empathy.
The cultural momentum of a city that you’ve adopted, Porto, which has
been constructed on the basis of more or less invisible stories and then
detonated with a specificity that should be told (and has already been
partially told) in another context.
Pedro is
symptomatic. Enclosed in the intoxicating opacity of repetition of the same
element. Warhol told us that watching soap operas basically conveys the same
sensation as that which the character senses, every day, as he sits on the
porch of his house and contemplates exactly the same landscape, given the
predictability of the narrative structure of the broadcasts. In this manner the
ecstasy of the same-image is exponentially increased in Warhol’s experimental
cinema. In this case we realize how, despite everything, the complex fabric of
our daily lives continues to be constructed via repetitive nexuses, in which we
supposedly have no time for day-to-day existence. In your painting, this is a
surprising oxymoron. The second, the microsecond, is treated with medieval
diligence, as if you were looking through the window and leapt forward
centuries in that northern light.
Beds, shirts,
decorated backgrounds, sofa patterns, wallpapers, bedspreads, sheets. Cotton,
wool or lycra. Flowers, branches, grass, trees, leaves. Skin, hair, flesh,
hair. We feel their volatility or their weight. And the water ...
A liquid state.
The metaphor of water inevitably conjures up the fleeting existence of life.
Once again. You condense a vital ambiguity in your painting. Recreation, of
course. Juvenile games played by adults - in an attempt to recover lost time.
Floating as a form of resistance, taking a break, a moment of possible
introspection. Water-movement, the enigma of painting, water transparency,
revelation of your capacity to forge reality.
In the open
space of nights spent outdoors, your flashlight intrudes and thereby creates
scenarios of intimacy. A single person caught in the artificial technology of
light, that rescues a phantasmal presence. Two persons who caress each other,
in a public dimension of the private sphere. We sense an almost intrusive side,
incorporated in the expected closeness.
It isn’t that
kiss that we contemplated. It isn’t that dive which makes us shudder. It’s the
conceptual thickness of an understanding of life. Fictionalized banality as a
character that is greater than the timeless narrative of uncertainties, which
lead us to destinations that are never entirely under control. In this manner
they are transcendent in their immanence.
Luc Tuymans
once said that it isn’t a question of an aesthetic, but rather of meaning and
need. The expression that could be conveyed by another craft, but is expressed
via painting. Aesthetics is for others. Need and meaning are for the author.
The need to respond to successive announced deaths. The need to look at the
world, via this artifice. Meaning
that is sought for in the flashes of a reality and that offers itself to us,
pre-prepared by marketing departments, using milestone works that do nothing
more than reproduce the predictable, via events that anesthetize us, by means
of their distancing cruelty. That’s why I prefer to classify your painting as
being necessary. And significant. I’m irritated by classifications that are
easily accepted by a market that is eager to grab labels, by a horde of
"agents" who have definitions on the tip of their tongues. What do
you lack, dear collector? A post-conceptual geometric abstraction? That can be
arranged. A painting-painting? A sculpture-sculpture? Expanded Painting?
Expanded sculpture? Ultimately, an endless array of classifications that
disguise easily dismantled voids. To me it feels like the Vandoma flea market,
where we used to exchange vinyl records (an activity which one must say was
nonetheless much more virtuous). A necessity. Yes. I think that you also paint
out of necessity. And not due to material necessity. To be honoured would be
more than a sufficient justification. But your particular positioning in the
context of these national arts, the slowness (self-imposed?) with which you
appear in the market, here and there, confirms this. And above all, the way
that you exhibit yourself. Necessity. Catharsis. Meaning. Communion. Facts and
fiction. Fictionalized factuality. What does it matter?
(Yes, you’ve
already noticed that I avoid naming things: I’m not interested by the
protagonists, most of whom I know personally. And I don’t think this will be of
interest to others, to whom we address ourselves).
An exception
nonetheless imposes itself. The emotional intensity of loss. The emotional
intensity of life experience. Father, mother, wife, daughter. Mother, perhaps one of the most
poignant tributes to the maternal figure in the history of national art, if I
may be so bold. Just as “The Prophet” is to fatherhood.
At first,
personal nudity denounces visceral proximity. Those backs are a physical
territory of a flow of unspeakable feelings. To be there. How many baths will
that mother have given? In a cyclical return, affections are returned, in the
simplicity of everyday life that sometimes seems to venture beyond us. When
this painting was exhibited, and as a counterpoint, “Waiting for Veronica” was
shown, in which your wife was intubated, in a single liquid state, and we
waited for the final moment before a new person was brought into the world. An
expected presence, a continued presence. Perhaps even an absence. Water appears
once again, as in the constructed image of “The Prophet”. Clean the paint
brushes. An image of abandonment that recalls and embodies an absence. I
remember, in this case, another of your self-portraits: “The invisible man”.
Engrossed in an attempt to escape, you denounce the severity of a present that
contains every possibility. Death is one of those possibilities. We recall the
words of one of the greats, Steiner: Every historical epoch, every society and
every culture has its own interpretation, its own iconography and its own death
rites. It’s quite possible that all the mythologies and religious and
metaphysical narratives or systems are actually a morgue, an effort, that is
often ingenious and elaborate, to build a house for the dead. On that basis,
one presumes that the living can emerge with a bearable pain, comforted,
animated by hopes that compensate them. The label to be observed at the bedside
of the dying, practises of exhibition, hospitalization or incineration are as
varied as human communities, ethnic identities and conditions of place.
According to statistical calculations, the number of people who have died since
the last ice age largely exceeds the number of the living. We’re still a planet
of the dead. But this fact is the source of our prayers, our ontologies and
much of our art, music and literature.
The manner in
which we react to death is culturally defined, so they say. But while the daily experience
associated to the difficulty of living with physical frailty may still be
represented, the sense of absence can only be conveyed via suggestion:
Paradise, where plants cease to have someone to tend them, and where water no
longer flows. Painful absence, against a vanished background. Closed eyes. Open
eyes to an always expected end. For this reason one can always, despite
everything, clean the paint brushes. For a return.
Return to
painting, says the cliché. No. Life within painting, in your case. As in the
burning of the Old Year, we fulfil rituals of renewal, that are indelibly
repeated. Because the suspension of life is too costly or, simply, a luxury
that we can’t afford.
In the midst of
loss, we find that life slips away. In the joy of the new, we find the life
that we anticipated, with all the inherent questions associated thereof. You
decide that the first portrait of your daughter is a hidden three-way kiss. The
first demarcation of a territory of affection, that one knows to be unique. A
magnificent decision, due to its unconventional nature, anchored in a territory
of profound contiguity, to which a natural springtime background adds the
fullness of expectant happiness. As Jonathan Crary has explained, our digital
era seems to be doomed to impose a kind of hypertrophy of the efficiency of
instantaneousness. A succession of images that have no referential ballast,
beyond their momentary impact. How can one avoid feeling in your painting, the
meandering seriousness of that which defines us as social beings? That’s why I
would say that you’re not producing a generational portrait when you portray
your nearest and dearest. Therefore, that’s not your wife, nor your daughter.
It’s the possibility of love. To quote Derrida: I can’t imagine a desire that
isn’t born, or begins, from the experience of a possible death. It's the same
thing. To put it simply and directly, I never think so much about death as in
the moments of joy, pleasure or intense desire. Of fleeting existence. I think this desire to produce
anything, especially a work of art, is thus defined from the context of a
possible death. Hence the urgency of everyday existence. Let me quote someone
else, in this case Borges: Isn’t it extraordinary to think that of the three
periods that we use to divide up time – the past, present and future - the
hardest, most elusive, is the present? The present is as incomprehensible as a
single point, because if we imagine it without extension, it doesn’t exist. We
have to imagine that the apparent present will be a little bit of the past and
a little bit of the future. In other words, we sense the passage of time. When
I refer to the passage of time, I’m talk about something that we all feel. If I
talk about the present, however, I'll be talking about an abstract entity. The
present isn’t an immediate datum of our consciousness. The present, which is so
difficult to define, is that which you offer to us. The transitory nature of
the present, imagined as a possible eternity.
This is an
unexpected journey: your paintings will thus be the purest form of abstraction,
unlike that which if offered to us by vision. Because they are a single point,
rather than a perceived line.
These single
points will constitute nodules that have astounding meaning. It's curious how
they return themes, characters, actions, and we're always stunned by their
presentification. In your most recent paintings, recently exhibited under the
title, “Sun and Moon”, different chronologies are intersected, in a revisited
past and an omnivorous present. Because the word, “past”, makes no sense to
you. You know that we continually rescue it, in the construction of a narrative
that we’d like to be coherent, but which ultimately dictates its own rules.
Precisely for this reason you understand the need for art to construct a
narrative that becomes more real than perceived reality.
We let time
slip by. In this aqueous state, that you find so appealing. We allow life to
confirm the importance of your significant falsifications. We allow the harshness of your supposed mildness to
overcome the first impressions. We allow some people - because ultimately,
what’s more important to us more than these few people? – to look at these
pictures, and these drawings, and feel that something touches their innermost
soul. The innards of an experienced life. The innards of a gaze that stares at
us. The innards of the inner world of an invisible man, who momentarily closes
his eyes in order to see things more clearly and make them visible.
